The World of Bela Lugosi has always been a both visual and aural experience, however little attention has been given to the latter...true, his Hungarian accent sollicited in the minds of the 20th century America how the voice of Dracula sounded. But the aural sensations of Hollywood's Dracula reverberate beyond his voice alone... |
| In
planning music for the documentary film Lugosi:Hollywood's Dracula,
I considered a variety of possibilities. The hope was to restore music
actually heard in Lugosi's films(especially those wonderful compositions/arrangements
heard in his B-films of the forties), present at least one period piece
of music unknown to modern audiences, include new versions of music associated
with the actor's better-known work, and even offer entirely new compositions
that capture the mood of Lugosi's persona. For the former two possibilities,
I turned to Lugosi's films and my own research, even unearthing a 1932
novelty tune saluting one of his most successful films.
But
the other hope seemed more insurmountable. At least they did until I began
talks with musician, composer and lifelong Lugosi buff Art Greenhaw.
Along with penning a completely new composition for the film, Art took
pages and pages of ancient sheet music I had assembled and turned them
into glorious music, and music that I believe captures the private and
public Lugosi.
