"Wonderful Tonight"
|
There’s no mistaking the strength in Doyle Nelson’s vocals. His deep baritone comes across clear and firm delivering each song on his new album "Wonderful Tonight" as if it were headed straight for the top of the charts.
The recording is the fourth for Nelson. His first studio experience was with Producer Sonny Limbo at Fame Studio in Memphis. The effort resulted in the hit single "Elvira" which raced to the top of many charts across the nation. His other efforts include an album produced by Roland Janes and arranged by Bill Justis, and a self-produced album titled "What Have We Got To Win." All three early efforts were recorded in the 70s and 80s in Memphis.
As a session musician, Nelson played keyboards at Hi, American and Sonic studios in Memphis, and worked with musicians like Reggie Young, Bobby Woods and Wayne Jackson. In the late 70s, he moved to Los Angeles for a year, headlining at venues throughout the Southern California area, including the world famous Palomino Club.
The Stonewall, AK, native, learned his craft playing alongside of many of the stars of Memphis, Ace Cannon, Bill Black, Gene Simmons, Bobby Woods and Sam the Sham. And you can find the influence of Country artists like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Hank Williams, Jr., and Conway Twitty woven throughout his music.
Producer Willie Mitchell compares Nelson’s vocal work to that of Bob Seger and Tom Jones, saying he is one of the finest vocalist he has had the pleasure of working with.
Although much of the time you can find Nelson headlining at his own club, Doyle Nelson’s Eldorado in West Memphis, AK, he can also be seen at venues throughout the Southeast. Watch for him at a club near you.
